計畫撰寫 (Work Proposals)

Exercise 54
I. Pre-Listening Exercise
II. Listening Exercise
III. Post-Listening Exercise

Purpose:

Writing the abstract (part one): briefly introducing the background, objective and methodology / 摘要撰寫(第一部份): 簡介背景,目標及方法

I. Pre-Listening Exercise [Top]

Check the meanings of the following words and expressions:

  • Genetic Algorithm (GA) courses
  • optimization problems
  • coding programs
  • implemented
  • a novel learning environment
  • computer-assisted instruction
  • benchmark problems
  • mathematical expression
  • fitness functions
  • case study

Consult page 193 of Writing Effective Work Proposals by Ted Knoy for some of these definitions.

II. Listening Exercise [Top]
1. Listen to the conversation by pressing the "Play" button and then answering the following questions. Press the "Final score" button to check your quiz results.

1. An increasing number of Genetic Algorithm (GA) courses are available on what topic?
A. assisting students in flexibly learning genetic algorithms
B. solving optimization problems
C. promoting computer-assisted instruction

2. What do students spend much time in doing?
A. integrating benchmark problems
B. implementing GAs
C. coding programs as exercises

3. What is Ann’s novel learning environment based on?
A. GAs
B. computer-assisted instruction
C. solving optimization problems

4. What does Ann’s case study demonstrate?
A. the effectiveness of the proposed environment
B. the ability to provide fitness functions of GAs
C. the ability of students to flexibly learn genetic algorithms

5. Which word is similar in meaning to “implement”?
A. terminate
B. inhibit
C. execute

2. Listen to the story again as you read the audiotranscript on page 334 of Writing Effective Work Proposals by Ted Knoy.

III. Post-Listening Exercise [Top]
1. Read the audiotranscript with a partner or change some of the information to adapt it to your situation.

2. Write the first part of an abstract for your work or research project by briefly introducing the background, objective and methodology. View the accompanying two Power Point presentations on details of how to write this assignment.

3. Write four questions beginning with “What” regarding the background, objective and methodology of one’s research project. The question does not have to come directly from the listening exercise.
Example: What do students of genetic algorithm courses spend much time in doing?
Answer: Coding programs as exercises when learning GAs.
Example: What is the purpose of your research?
Answer: To develop a novel system architecture to increase the efficiency of PDA use
